Kindergarten lead levels too high
Excessive lead levels were found in a water sample collected from a restaurant-grade stainless steel water boiler installed at a nursery school a month ago. Management of the Hong Kong Christian Kwun Tong Nursery School said that the boiler has only been used to sterilize utensils for the past two weeks. Samples of drinking water were found to be safe. There are no plans to run blood tests for schoolchildren. Lead levels in the boiler sample were about 10 times higher than the standard set by the World Health Organization. Principal Patricia Tang Ming-wai said she was puzzled by the finding. She said screws, instead of soldering metal, had been used in the pipes' joints. Licensed plumber Hugo Kan Kwok-leung said further tests would be necessary to identify the source of the lead - which might be inside the water boiler.Tianjin food is tested safeThe Centre for Food Safety has tested 40 samples of food from Tianjin after the explosions of dangerous chemicals in August. None were found tainted with cyanide, Secretary for Food and Health Ko Wing-man said on Thursday. On the last day of his three-day visit to Beijing, Ko said that the central government's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine was monitoring the possible contamination of food supplied by Tianjin to Hong Kong. So far, the test results of water, soil and air samples taken outside the explosion site have all been normal.1st Cyclothon planned for OctHong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced on Thursday that the first-ever "Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon" will take place on Oct 10 and 11. Liu Yang, 24, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of title and practice without registration. The court also heard that Lu Junlin, 22, who is also a mainland student, had recruited customers. But Liu, who is studying in a public health administration program, performed the procedure. They were caught in the act in a guestroom of Tsim Sha Tsui luxury hotel The Icon on June 24. No plea was taken from Lu on Thursday. Magistrate So Wai-tak said a deterrent sentence was needed to safeguard the standard of Hong Kong's medical services.
